Message from the National Secretary

It’s been another busy month and we’re going to be even busier with negotiations for new Agreements, including CBA, Westpac and ANZ, due to get underway.

We’re also tackling the Government and Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg over the failure to include finance sector employees in the Roundtable meeting to consider the recommendations of the recent Parliamentary Joint Committee into financial planning and advice.

Despite being reminded we are the sole registered organisation under the Fair Work Act representing the industrial interests of workers employed in the financial services sector, including financial planners and advisers, the FSU was not included in the forum.

We will continue to lobby on behalf of finance employees and to get the message across that until the underlying problems such as unrealistic targets and the conflicted REM models are addressed, problems will continue.

This month, I’ll be visiting each state to review operations in order to see how we can support staff in the long run and serve you, our members, better.

Yesterday, I hosted a Morning Tea for Victoria’s Life Members and Retired Members as part of our 95th Anniversary celebrations. There have also been morning teas in Queensland and Western Australia. The Anniversary has been an opportunity to share some of the stories of the people who’ve worked hard for our union to achieve the benefits we enjoy today. I am delighted to announce that as a result of yesterday's morning tea, we're now working towards forming a retired members group. Watch this space.

New FSU Mobile Phone App

Good news - we’ve developed an App to help you access our website from your mobile phone and allow you to get information directly from us.

The App means we’ll be able to send you updates on things that are important to you, for example your pay and conditions, new Agreements and negotiations – as well as some of our great member services such as the Ambassador card, the Coles card, movie tickets, journey insurance etc.

With employers' IT systems often discrediting incoming union material as SPAM, the App will also ensure that you, our members, have key information when you need it.

We will be launching the FSU App very soon.

We’ll also be running a competition to get you downloading the App. There will be two prizes:

  • The first is a $100 voucher from JB Hi Fi for the member who downloads the App themselves and gets five other members to do it as well.
  • The second prize is two movie tickets to the first member who downloads the App and sends us a pic of herself or himself with the app on their phone (see pic of National Secretary Fiona Jordan), which we can share with other members on social media.

Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for the details.

ANZ negotiations to resume

The new ANZ Australia CEO, Mark Whelan, has met with National Secretary, Fiona Jordan, Assistant National Secretary, Geoff Derrick, and ANZ President, Dolly Jensen and discussed resuming negotiations. Talks are now expected to get underway mid-year.

At the meeting, Dolly asked Mark Whelan about a number of concerns, including staffing, workloads and job security. If you haven’t caught up with his answers, see Dolly’s latest blog.

Pay increases kicked in for thousands of ANZ employees earlier this month and thanks to the overwhelming decision by employees to Vote NO to the Bank’s EBA proposal, the increases came with no strings attached.

CBA, Westpac, Bendigo and B&E bargaining

Negotiations will also start soon for the Westpac Group Enterprise Agreement, which is due to expire in December, and the CBA Agreement, which also needs to be renewed.

Talks with Bendigo Bank start shortly as well: we’re seeking a three year agreement with annual increases of 4% plus additional improvements such as staffing levels, grade structure and bonuses.

There have also been two bargaining sessions with B&E management where they have offered two in principle 2.25% increases from July 2015 and July 2016, a two year agreement, two paid 10 minute tea breaks and sick leave without certificate increased from two days to four days a year. This is currently under membership consideration.

Surveys have, meanwhile, been prepared for both Westpac and CBA (which includes CommSec, CommInsure and Colonial) Agreements to ensure we focus on the things you value most in your work life. So if you haven’t filled them out, get on to it now:

Secure your pay at NAB

Things are also moving at NAB where the classification pay review is underway to fix the ‘broken pay model’.

This is our opportunity to influence the content of the new pay model so get involved with the discussions that are being run by FSU workplace Reps and complete the short online survey.

This is also your chance to step up as a Secure Pay Champion.

Westpac Work Summit

The FSU sent a 20-strong delegation to the recent Westpac summit on Work Sustainability this month in Sydney. This is our team which also included National Secretary Fiona Jordan.

Run or walk - your pick!

It’s one of the most popular fun runs and was established with the help of one of our own so we’re jumping on board.

The Mother’s Day Classic has raised millions of dollars for breast cancer research and one of its pioneers was Mavis Robertson, who passed away recently.

Mavis championed workers’ entitlement to superannuation and helped establish the annual national fun run and walk, which continues to flourish.

The event is on Sunday May 10 so if you want to be part of the FSU team, ring our MRC team on 1300 366 378 for the details.
