Message from the National Secretary

Seasons greetings to you and your family

With just a few days before the end of the year, I would like to wish all of you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

May the festive season be peaceful and you get an opportunity to relax and unwind, and enjoy time with your loved ones.

The Member Rights Centre is operating between Christmas and New Year on 29 - 31 December, should you require urgent advice or assistance.

As always the FSU will lobby hard for fairness and dignity for all finance employees.

In the coming year, we will continue to put members’ rights in the workplace front and centre of everything we do.

In unity
Fiona Jordan

FSU out in force at ANZ AGM

Excellent work from the FSU yesterday in Melbourne, with the team putting to the board and shareholders some hard questions and home truths.

National Secretary Fiona Jordan addressed the meeting, tackling ANZ chairman David Gonski, and the board about their decision to break away from negotiations and to put its an inferior proposal to a vote.

Fiona called on the board to drop its cost cutting agenda and return to the negotiating table.

She said there was nothing unreasonable about workers wanting ‘fairness and dignity’ and their pay increase and protection around their hours, salaries and redundancy provisions.

“It is simply wrong for a massively profitable organisation like ANZ to try and reduce or renege on their people obligations.”

Fiona also revealed to the interest of media that during negotiations on retail banking issues, ANZ had even suggested some employees spend their time reading the New Idea magazine.

She stated this was ‘offensive.’

Fiona’s speech was well-received by shareholders with one shareholder later telling the board he was alarmed to hear the concerns about ‘salary remuneration.’

David Gonski has been quoted as saying the bank would keep ‘talking’ and insists ANZ loves its staff, too, so that’s what we will be holding him to.

NAB dispute: Hi ho, hi ho, it’s back to Fair Work we go

A long-running dispute at the NAB CCC came close to resolution recently with agreement reached on start times, overtime and follow up time arrangements. The sticking point remains shut down arrangements, with NAB refusing to budge on incorporating a 5 minute shut down time within each shift so that employees can log off, shut down and pack up within rostered hours. We’re heading back to the Fair Work Commission to move things along.

Let your voice be heard on Australian living standards

FSU members are urged to help shape the type of Australia they want.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions has produced a survey aimed at articulating the values of working people and forming the basis of what it will campaign around at the next election and beyond.

The survey is called Our Living Standards – Our Voice and is open to everyone. Please take the time to participate.

IAG: Member consultation underway. Have your say now

The Agreement setting out pay and conditions for employees at IAG businesses NRMA, CGU, SGIO, SGIC, Lumley, Swann and Wesfarmers Insurance expires in February.

Due to extensive change occurring across IAG in 2014 and early 2015, including the integration of Wesfarmers Insurance and the transformation program involved in the proposed new operating structure, IAG proposes to delay negotiating a new enterprise agreement until September 2015.

FSU has secured a commitment from IAG that the proposed delay to the start of negotiations will not hold up payments due to employees for the 2014/15 performance year.

All FSU members at IAG are encouraged to vote on the employer’s proposal before the end of year break.

New online training modules for FSU Reps

FSU Reps play a key role in making a true difference for workers across the finance industry.

To give you the skills and confidence to be an effective FSU Rep, we run Reps training courses regularly through your local FSU Office. If you haven’t yet completed Reps Training, or need a refresher, we strongly encourage you to enrol in 2015.

In addition to our existing face-to-face training courses, we are pleased to let you know that we have launched three brand new FSU Reps Training modules online.

The training covers recruiting new members, how to conduct workplace consultation and how to represent a member in meetings.

The modules are designed to be done at your own pace and should take about half an hour to work through.

FSU Rep Susanne Pearce from St George Bank says "I found the training very informative and helpful. It’s a great resource for FSU Reps and I strongly encourage all Reps to log on and complete the online training.”
