Workers’ Memorial Day 2013 – Unions make work safer

28th April 2013 marks International Workers’ Memorial Day, this year’s theme being Unions Make Work Safer.

The FSU works tirelessly with our members to make safer, healthier workplaces a reality, and we’ve achieved this most recently with regard to workplace bullying.

It is thanks to the bravery of FSU members in telling their stories relating to the issue, that future individuals affected will now be able to get support quickly through the Fair Work Commission and its focus on early intervention.

Subsequent to a Parliamentary Inquiry, the government has responded by amending the Fair Work Act to allow an employee who has suffered bullying at work a right to seek assistance through the Fair Work Commission.

FSU’s full submission made to the Parliamentary Inquiry can be viewed here

Our industry is an increasingly pressured environment often characterized by excessive workloads, hours and unfair performance targets. The pressure that comes with these targets – a core component of banking culture and the finance sector- is a major contributor to employees’ stress and decreased levels of well-being.

The government’s response supports measures to adopt a broader, more inclusive national definition of workplace bullying; promotes education and awareness of what constitutes workplace bullying; and will lead the development of national training standards to improve responses to bullying complaints.

On April 28th, there will be Workers’ Memorial Day events. This is an opportunity for unions and their members all around the world to unite and display their commitment to improving OHS standards for workers, and commemorate those whose lives have been lost at work.

May Day

In Europe, May Day is an ancient festival to welcome the spring weather and to drive away evil spirits.

It is also the International Workers Holiday, which started over a hundred years ago as a universal work stoppage in favour of an eight hour working day and has become a yearly expression of workers desire for dignity and respect at work, and better lives for them and their families. It is a day when workers unite and demonstrate their strength as a collective, and it is a chance to both reflect on the struggles of the past and celebrate the gains that workers have made.

We hope you can join us at one of these events:
