Westpac Group - Working Weekends : Are you getting your loadings? Or are you getting ripped off?

The FSU has received a large number of calls from members regarding working on weekends and extension to trading hours on Saturdays.   Members have reported they are being directed to change their roster with only two days’ notice, advised they can only receive time off in lieu, not the applicable loadings and advised their branch will be extending trading hours on a Saturday.

Westpac must comply with the provisions set out in the Westpac Group Enterprise Agreement 2016 regarding setting and changing your hours of work, overtime, and loadings.  The Enterprise Agreement details your rights and entitlements around hours of work, loadings and overtime. In summary:

  1. You cannot be directed to work weekends; the bank can offer you the opportunity to work Saturdays but working Saturdays is by agreement only, so you can say no.
     
  2. When setting your hours of work  the bank must take on board your personal, family and financial circumstances.  When setting your rostered hours of work the bank must be given 7 days’ notice prior to the commencement of a four week cycle.   Any change during a four week cycle must be by agreement. 
     
  3. Working Weekends as part of your ordinary hours
  • If you agree to work ordinary hours on a Saturday, you are entitled to a 50% loading. 
  • If you agree to work on a Sunday as part of your ordinary hours you are entitled to a 75% loading.
  • It is important to note that in every 7-day period you are entitled to 2 days off, when you agree to work weekends. You can request that the 2 days off to be consecutive, but this will only occur where this is practicable.
     
  1. When will I be paid overtime for working on a weekend?
  • If you agree to work Saturdays or Sundays and you work more than 152 hours in a 4 week cycle, all employees earning less than $77,194 are entitled to receive overtime loading of 100%.
