Bankwest: Assistant Store Manager Roles Gone
What Happens to their Workload

The recent Bankwest announcement to remove the Assistant Store Manager (ASM) roles in retail stores has raised many questions from colleagues. FSU contacted the bank to seek clarification of the most asked questions – what happens to the ASMs’ workload? Who will be responsible for the work previously done by the ASMs?

This is what the bank said

“Assistant Managers were introduced primarily with the function to cover the Store Manager role for stores with seven day trade and required a point of reference on days when the Store Manager was not present. With the reduction in weekend trade there is a reduced requirement for the Assistant Manager position.”

The bank also said

“Responsibilities of Assistant Manager role which have been reallocated include:

- Provide cover for Stores in the absence of the Store Manager - Short term absence covered by Point of Reference, longer term cover by Relief Store Manager
- Act as point of escalation for product and procedural enquiries and customer complaints in the absence of a Store Manager - Short term absence covered by Point of Reference, longer term cover by Relief Store Manager
- Focus on supporting the Store to deliver on key KPIs through colleague coaching and development.  This may include 121s, observations and development activities. - This will be completed by the Store Manager (or the Relief Store Manager in their absence)
- Risk management including the completion of monthly CSA - This will be completed by the Store Manager (or the Relief Store Manager in their absence)

PORs and Store Managers expected to absorb workload

You may be affected in one of the following ways:

  • If you are the POR or Store Manager and believe the additional workload will adversely affect your ability to meet the requirements of your KPIs
  • if you feel there is not enough time in your day to take on the additional workload
  • if you are the teller or sales consultant and are also being asked to absorb some of the ASM duties

NOTE:  Point of Reference (POR) PLUS Allowance

With the removal of the ASM role in retail stores, EA Clause 13.2 (d) means that for retail stores with more than 7 Full Time Equivalent staff a POR Plus annual allowance of $2270 will apply (and be shared between colleagues who are required to act as a POR).
