FSU members meet Westpac over staffing
On Wednesday, November 30 an FSU delegation led by workplace reps Alison Hines and Emma Flynn met with senior representatives from the Westpac Group including: Stuart Hall (Chief Operating Officer, Westpac Consumer Banking); Ross Miller (General Manager, St. George Retail Banking) and Senior Human Resources Representatives.
The purpose of the meeting was to hear the bank’s response to an earlier proposal where FSU members asked Westpac to consider the following, in relation to widespread understaffing issues:
  • Introduce a relief pool in the respective regions to cover for planned and unplanned absences.
  • Conduct a manual “audit” of staffing compliment in its retail branches and where transaction volumes are higher that what is deemed reasonable, more staff be hired.
The bank acknowledged that its i360 software, used for calculating staffing needs across its retail branch network, was not perfect but they remained committed to it. They reiterated that any eligible unpackaged staff member who works approved additional hours should submit a claim for payment or time off in lieu in accordance with the Westpac Group Enterprise Agreement. Any legitimate claim for payment or time off in lieu which is rejected by management should be brought to the attention of the FSU via nswact@fsunion.org.au. Similarly, any incidents that pose a risk to the health, safety and well being of staff, including aggressive customer behaviour as a result of understaffing should be reported immediately.
FSU will be holding meetings in the coming weeks to discuss next steps. Look out for details of your closest meeting and be sure to attend to have your say.
